So Many Dynamos

I saw So Many Dynamos last night at a small venue in town called The Basement. Quite appropriately, The Basement is a small bar located underground, is dark and moody (as bars should be) and does not accept credit cards, which is ridiculous because this is the 21st century. They have an ATM, but I’ve never been there while it’s working. I surmise that this is because it’s never working. Or there is a special plan reserved to keep me from drinking. That might not be a bad thing.

So Many Dynamos was awesome. They’re one of those bands that does one thing, basically: in this case it’s Dismemberment Plan-inspired indie rock; but they do it well enough that the lack of variety really doesn’t matter, because they’re kicking your teeth out with how awesome they are. They were tight and their energy was infectious. They played several songs from their new album, which can’t get into my grubby little hard drive soon enough, and I was impressed. The songs they chose to play seemed to lack a bit of the compositional meandering that afflicted some of their work on Flashlights and tended to be more conventionally structured pop songs, but they retained SMD’s tendencies towards dissonant, fleeting key changes and occasional meter shifts.

The best thing about the concert might have been the fact that it was over before 10:00. I am an old codger, and this is important to me.
