Quick thought: Of all the genres that are bashing together in the metaphysical game-design brain space, the role-playing game is totally winning. Sequential improvement of avatar ability and functionality is where it’s at, and almost every genre (except for, perhaps, the fighting game) is co-opting RPG mechanics.
